Step 1. Choosing Your Bead Making Material
I like to use colorful magazines, but really, the choice is up to you. You want black and white beads? Choose the ones with words on them. We used old gardening and bird magazines. Lots of color there! Newspaper would work, or even computer paper with your own drawings.
And yes, that's my 10 year old with an exacto knife. She's been taught how to use it, and only uses it with me around. Kids can use the sharp stuff, they just need to be taught how to use it safely :)
Step 2. Cut Your Paper
You can use an exacto knife or scissors. There are many shapes you can cut the paper in. The one my kids and I found we liked best was a long skinny triangle. You can make them wavy or straight. Cut the edge off one end of of your sheet of paper (long or short way) so that you have an angle. Continue to cut your paper into triangles until you have the desired amount, or until you've exhausted the colors you want.
Step 3. Brush the Wrong Side of Your Paper with Glue
Step 4. Roll Your Bead!
Place your rolling device at the fat, or wide, end and tightly roll up your bead. Smooth the paper as you go. As you roll, angle the paper and move it around a little to get the shape you want. It might take a little practice, but even the oddly shaped beads are cool.
Slide it off the rolling tool. Don't press on the middle of the bead as you do this, or you may end up smashing your bead. Or unrolling it.
